We engaged Chromatist to paint our 100 year old home in mid-town Toronto this spring. There were a number of issues that made this job a little unique. We had just gotten our knob-and-tube wiring replaced so there were a lot of holes that had been recently roughly plastered over.
Also, there was a large hole in the lathe-and-plaster ceiling of our dining room from a plumbing leak. Finally, our hallway was finished with faux
painting that simulated marble and brick with some trompe-l’oele of leaves in a vase that we wished to preserve rather than paint over.

Shayan and his team were a pleasure to work with and did a great job on this challenging project. Every day the painters were very considerate and minimized disruption such that we were able to continue to work from home during the whole process.

We especially appreciate the work on the faux painting in the hall, where Shayan had someone come in to analyze color matches and then hand painted and blended the colors so as to seamlessly hide the cracks and plaster that was there before. It looks better now than it did when we bought our house (a long time ago!).

Thanks Shayan and team. We are definitely interested in working with you again.

Shayan and his team were awesome!

Totally professional, trustworthy and got our job done very quickly ! They worked around our family of 5 while painting our whole house. They also worked well around the other tradespeople we had coming and going. Most importantly, the painting looked fantastic.

I highly recommend Chromatist painters!

I normally don’t like dealing with contractors, except for those few who truly understand the value of customer service. And Shayan and his team are the best! On time. On budget. Excellent job. Friendly. And Shayan knows that superior customer service is the key to happy customers. I highly recommend Shayan and Chromatist for any painting needs, you will be so happy you did

When to Bring in a Plaster Paint Company

Timing matters. Decorative plaster is a final finish, and needs a clean, smooth surface to be applied properly. Here’s when to bring in a specialist:

  • During drywall or just after priming (but before final painting)
  • Before any wallpaper or millwork is installed
  • After electrical and plumbing are complete
  • Usually, right before the cleaning crew comes in — it’s one of the last trades on-site

Good plaster companies often book 6–8 weeks in advance, especially for custom work. So don’t wait until the end to make the call — start with a consultation as soon as you’re finalizing finishes.

How Long Does It Take?

For a small project, like a single accent wall or fireplace surround, plaster application typically takes:

  • 2–3 days from start to finishDay 1: Speciality primer and base coatDay 2: Application of decorative layersDay 3: Waxing/sealing and cure time (optional depending on finish)

Larger projects, like whole rooms or commercial lobbies, can take 5–10 days, depending on complexity, drying times, and design customization.

How Much Decorative Plaster Installation Cost?

Cost varies widely, depending on surface prep, product, and complexity.

  • Venetian plaster or limewash: $8–$30 per sq ft
  • Microcement bathrooms or high-detail areas: $25–$35+ per sq ft
  • Fireplaces, barrel ceilings, or custom arches: may incur design surcharges

Pro Tip: For projects using multiple finishes (e.g., Venetian plaster on the hood fan and microcement in the bathroom), allocate 10–15% of your wall budget to decorative plaster.

Why Plaster Paint is Trending in 2025

Plaster finishes are trending because they:

  • Offer natural texture and depth unmatched by flat paint
  • Fit into modern, organic, minimalist, or luxury styles
  • Are seamless, eco-friendly, and customizable
  • Replace dated elements like wainscoting or shiplap with sculptural walls

Designers are choosing plaster because it’s both timeless and modern — earthy but luxurious.

Why Hiring a Reputable Plaster Paint Company Matters

Decorative plaster is an art. It’s not just paint — it’s craftsmanship.

A skilled company will:

  • Help you select the right finish for your space and lighting
  • Create custom samples based on texture, color, and feel
  • Prepare the surface properly and ensure uninterrupted dry times
  • Use authentic, breathable, and premium-quality materials
  • Seal and protect the finish so it lasts for years

Hiring a general painter or DIYing these finishes can result in cracking, blotchy color, or visible seams — issues that cost more to fix than getting it right the first time.
