Exterior Microcement Installers in Toronto

MiMiMiMicrocement in ExteriorL Our Ultimate Guide to Concrete Micro Topping

The architectural landscape of Toronto is changing. From the sleek commercial strips of Queen Street West to the refined residential pockets of Rosedale and the Kingsway, standard concrete finishes and painted masonry are giving way to a more sophisticated aesthetic. Enter exterior microcement—a high-performance, polymer-modified coating that delivers the seamless beauty of architectural concrete without the weight, thickness, or structural limitations of traditional poured slabs.

As premier exterior microcement installers in Toronto, we are seeing a massive surge in demand for this versatile material. It allows home and business owners to completely reimagine their existing surfaces, offering an ultra-durable, weather-resistant finish that thrives in our demanding southern Ontario climate.

Common Applications for Exterior Microcement

Microcement is incredibly adhesive, allowing it to bond to a wide variety of stable exterior substrates, including existing concrete, brick, and specialized backer boards. In Toronto, it is frequently utilized to elevate and modernize several key outdoor areas:

  • Front Porches & Steps: Say goodbye to spalling, cracked concrete porches. Microcement resurfaces worn entryways with a sleek, slip-resistant, and continuous finish that creates an immediate, high-end impression.

  • Decks, Patios & Balconies: Homeowners looking for a clean, minimalist, or Mediterranean-inspired outdoor living space use microcement to create expansive, seamless floors. It is perfect for elevated balconies and backyard patios alike, creating an open layout that flows beautifully into the landscape.

  • Commercial Storefronts & Facades: For local businesses, gyms, and retail spaces, microcement transforms old, dated painted brick or stucco into bold, industrial-chic architectural statements that command attention from the street.

  • Commercial Storefronts, Exterior Walls & Facades: For local businesses, gyms, and retail spaces, microcement transforms old, dated painted brick, concrete, or stucco into bold, industrial-chic architectural statements. Resurfacing entire exterior walls and building facades commands major attention from the street.

  • Pool Surroundings: Because it is slip-resistant and highly durable, microcement is an exceptional choice for pool coping and surrounding decks. It delivers a seamless, resort-style aesthetic that stays cooler underfoot than traditional dark stone or concrete pavers.

Case Study: The Soft Elegance of Custom Warm White Microcement

To truly understand the design flexibility of this material, look no further than one of our recent residential projects in Toronto. The goal was to transform a plain, weathered exterior concrete porch and deck into an inviting, high-end architectural feature.

The Exterior Microcement Application Process

We began by prepping the existing concrete substrate to ensure a flawless mechanical bond. We then applied a base layer embedded with reinforcing mesh to prevent any future shifting or hairline cracking from Toronto’s intense freeze-thaw cycles.

For the finish, we troweled a fine-grain white exterior microcement over the surface. This specific fine mix allows for an ultra-smooth, tight texture that feels highly refined underfoot while retaining the necessary exterior slip resistance. To complete the aesthetic, we then glazed the white fine microcement in a soft, warm off-white color and finished the entire installation with a high-performance exterior sealant for maximum weather protection.

Step 4: Final Custom Color Glazing and Weatherproof Sealing

The Aesthetic Finish & Custom Color Glaze

The true magic of this project lies in its bespoke color design. While grey concrete finishes dominate the industrial design scene, this project demanded a softer, more elegant approach.

To achieve this, we finished the cured microcement with a custom-formulated warm white glaze. This glazing technique allowed us to perfectly match the tone of the home’s existing exterior architectural columns. The result is a stunning, warm minimalist aesthetic. The finish is bright and expansive, yet completely devoid of the stark, cold feeling of a pure white. Instead, the subtle trowel movements and natural, faint mottling of the microcement peek through the glaze, giving the porch and deck an organic, stone-like depth. It bridges the gap between clean modernism and classic elegance, perfectly anchoring the home’s facade.

We engaged Chromatist to paint our 100 year old home in mid-town Toronto this spring. There were a number of issues that made this job a little unique. We had just gotten our knob-and-tube wiring replaced so there were a lot of holes that had been recently roughly plastered over.
Also, there was a large hole in the lathe-and-plaster ceiling of our dining room from a plumbing leak. Finally, our hallway was finished with faux
painting that simulated marble and brick with some trompe-l’oele of leaves in a vase that we wished to preserve rather than paint over.

Shayan and his team were a pleasure to work with and did a great job on this challenging project. Every day the painters were very considerate and minimized disruption such that we were able to continue to work from home during the whole process.

We especially appreciate the work on the faux painting in the hall, where Shayan had someone come in to analyze color matches and then hand painted and blended the colors so as to seamlessly hide the cracks and plaster that was there before. It looks better now than it did when we bought our house (a long time ago!).

Thanks Shayan and team. We are definitely interested in working with you again.

I normally don’t like dealing with contractors, except for those few who truly understand the value of customer service. And Shayan and his team are the best! On time. On budget. Excellent job. Friendly. And Shayan knows that superior customer service is the key to happy customers. I highly recommend Shayan and Chromatist for any painting needs, you will be so happy you did

Microcment in Exterior Pricing & Investment Guide

Because every exterior microcement installation requires custom substrate preparation and bespoke color artistry, we price each project individually based on square footage, current substrate condition, and design complexity.

Estimated Cost Range: $25 to $45+ per square foot.

Factors Influencing Cost: The amount of mechanical grinding required, whether an epoxy sand broadcast is necessary to bridge failing substrates, the total number of specialized finish coats, and custom architectural detailing (like hand-scored slab definitions or bespoke color glazing).

Microcement in Exterior Toronto: Frequently Asked Questions

Can exterior microcement withstand Toronto’s freeze-thaw cycles?2026-05-06T18:29:44-04:00

Yes. Unlike interior-grade coatings, our Exterior Microcement is polymer-modified to remain flexible. This allows the surface to expand and contract during Ontario’s extreme temperature shifts between summer and winter, preventing the cracking or delamination common in traditional concrete.

Is microcement slippery when used on outdoor pool surrounds or wet decks?2026-05-06T18:30:45-04:00

Not if installed correctly. For exterior and wet areas, we incorporate an anti-slip aggregate into the final sealer layers. This provides essential grip and safety (even for bare feet) without losing the sleek, architectural aesthetic of the seamless surface.

Can I apply microcement over my existing wood deck?2026-05-06T18:31:33-04:00

We do not recommend applying microcement over traditional pressure-treated wood decks because wood moves too much. However, it is an excellent solution for resurfacing existing concrete pads, stone pavers, or specialized exterior-grade cement boards.

How long does an exterior microcement installation last in Ontario?2026-05-06T18:33:06-04:00

With professional installation and proper sealing, an exterior microcement surface can last 20+ years. Like any premium material, it requires a simple reseal every 3–5 years to maintain its UV protection and water resistance.

How much does exterior microcement installation cost in Toronto?2026-05-06T18:34:21-04:00

For professional installation in the GTA, pricing typically ranges from $20 to $35 per square foot. Factors such as the condition of the substrate, the need for reinforcement mesh, and the complexity of the design (e.g., stairs or built-in planters) will influence the final quote.

Does the microcement color fade in direct sunlight?2026-05-06T18:35:19-04:00

No. Our exterior systems use UV-stable mineral pigments that are integrated into the material itself. This ensures that even high-exposure areas like south-facing terraces and pool decks maintain their color depth for years without “yellowing” or fading.

Is exterior microcement resistant to road salt and winter chemicals?2026-05-06T18:36:40-04:00

While microcement is highly durable, salt can be corrosive to any high-end surface over time. We recommend using pet-friendly or non-corrosive ice melters and rinsing the surface in the spring to remove any winter salt residue.

Can microcement be used for outdoor kitchens and BBQ counters?2026-05-06T18:37:16-04:00

Absolutely. It is heat-resistant and, when finished with our professional-grade sealers, becomes non-porous and resistant to oil, grease, and wine spills—making it a superior choice for custom outdoor cabinetry and countertops.

How do I maintain my exterior microcement floor?2026-05-06T18:38:06-04:00

Maintenance on exterior microcement floor is remarkably easy because there are no grout lines. A simple sweep and a wash with a pH-neutral cleaner or a garden hose is usually all that’s required. Avoid using high-pressure power washers at close range, as they can wear down the protective sealer prematurely

Do you offer DIY kits for exterior microcement projects?2026-05-06T18:38:35-04:00

Yes. We offer Professional Exterior Kits specifically formulated for the Toronto climate. These kits include the flexible base coats, UV-stable pigments, and specialized exterior sealers required for a successful outdoor application.
