The Kleinburg Project: Redefining Outdoor Luxury with Exterior Microcement
When it comes to modern landscape architecture, the line between raw structure and natural beauty is finer than ever. For our recent project in the prestigious enclave of Kleinburg, Ontario, the goal was clear: create a sophisticated, high-end transition from the main estate down to the poolside oasis.
The secret weapon to achieving this look? Exterior microcement. Here is how we utilized this cutting-edge material to transform a series of rigid, harsh concrete elements into a soft, monolithic masterpiece.
What is Exterior Microcement?
Microcement is an advanced, polymer-modified cement coating that can be applied thinly over almost any existing substrate—including concrete, drywall, wood, and metal. While it has taken the interior design world by storm via seamless bathrooms and minimalist floors, its exterior-grade counterpart is a game-changer for outdoor living.
Exterior microcement is specifically engineered to be completely waterproof, UV-resistant, and flexible enough to withstand the brutal freeze-thaw cycles of Ontario winters without cracking.

The Aesthetic Benefits: Pure “Stealth Wealth” Minimalism
Traditional outdoor concrete often looks industrial, cold, and unfinished. Stone veneer can look overly busy. Microcement offers a third, highly coveted aesthetic: Quiet Luxury. * Seamless Continuity: By eliminating grout lines, seams, and expansion joints, it creates a continuous, single-surface look that expands the visual scale of a space.
- Soft Light Diffusion: Unlike polished stone or brushed steel, microcement has a subtle, matte texture that absorbs and softly diffuses natural sunlight.
- Organic Movement: Because it is hand-applied with a trowel, the surface possesses a delicate, organic variation in tone that feels alive and custom-crafted, rather than mass-produced.
Outdoor Microcement Transformation: Softening the Poolside Journey
For the Kleinburg project, the client was faced with a common architectural dilemma: heavy, harsh concrete structural elements running alongside the exterior steps leading down to the pool. Left raw, it felt imposing and cold.
We stepped in and coated the entire concrete facade and a series of custom vertical planters lined up next to the steps.
By enveloping the rigid concrete in a soft, off-white microcement, we completely erased the industrial pour-lines and imperfections. The result is a series of seamless, sculptural planters that look as if they were carved from a single block of refined stone.
This soft, muted canvas was intentional. By neutralizing the harsh concrete, the microcement creates the ultimate high-contrast backdrop for the future greenery and vibrant plants destined for these planters. The lush leaves and organic shapes of the landscaping will pop brilliantly against the pristine, monolithic finish, framing the poolside walkway beautifully.
Transforming Outdoor Concrete in Toronto: The 4-Step Microtopping Overhaul

Step 1: The Before Phase – Assessing the Bare Concrete Slabs
Every successful Toronto microtopping project begins with structural inspection. We started with raw, industrial concrete slabs that were durable but lacked the refined, seamless aesthetic the client wanted for their garden.

Step 2: Surface Preparation – Powerwashed, Dried, and Primed
To ensure the microcement overlay bonds permanently and survives the Ontario climate, prep is everything. The concrete was thoroughly powerwashed to remove contaminants, dried completely, and treated with a specialized high-bond primer to seal the porous substrate.

Step 3: Application – Hand-Troweling Two Layers of Exterior Microcement
This is where the concrete art happens. Our installers hand-applied two separate layers of premium exterior microtopping. Troweling by hand allows us to control the subtle textures, eliminate seams, and craft that soft, monolithic movement.

Step 4: The Final Cure – Sealed and Protected for the Toronto Climate
Once the microcement fully cured, we applied an industrial-grade, UV-resistant exterior sealer. This final step locks in the soft white color, protects the surface from pool chemicals, and ensures the installation can handle intense Canadian freeze-thaw cycles.

Microcment in Exterior Pricing & Investment Guide
Because every exterior microcement installation requires custom substrate preparation and bespoke color artistry, we price each project individually based on square footage, current substrate condition, and design complexity.
Estimated Cost Range: $25 to $45+ per square foot.
Factors Influencing Cost: The amount of mechanical grinding required, whether an epoxy sand broadcast is necessary to bridge failing substrates, the total number of specialized finish coats, and custom architectural detailing (like hand-scored slab definitions or bespoke color glazing).
