Venetian Plaster on Fireplace: A Textured Taupe Finish in Kleinburg

This custom home in Kleinburg was designed with a warm, modern European sensibility, where natural materials and subtle architectural details carry through from room to room. Exposed wooden beams add warmth and structure throughout the house, while creamy stone, soft neutral tones and hand-finished surfaces give the interiors a layered, understated luxury.

Rather than relying on highly polished or overly decorative finishes, the home has a quieter character. The materials are meant to feel tactile, natural and connected, with each room carrying its own variation of the same overall design language.

In the ensuite, the fireplace became an opportunity to introduce a more expressive surface while still respecting that restraint. We used a highly textured taupe Venetian plaster around the fireplace, pairing it with a creamy stone surround and finishing the plaster with a flat wax.

The result is a fireplace that feels integrated into the architecture rather than added as a separate decorative feature, with enough texture and movement to create depth while maintaining the calm, refined atmosphere of the home.

Rather than creating a smooth, highly polished Venetian plaster surface, we chose a much more expressive application for this fireplace.

Multiple layers were worked by hand to create visible movement, variation and texture throughout the surface. The result is a finish that changes subtly depending on the direction of the natural and ambient light.

The taupe Venetian plaster was selected to sit comfortably between warm grey and earthy beige. This allows the fireplace to feel substantial without creating a harsh contrast against the softer materials throughout the ensuite.

One of the advantages of using Venetian plaster on a fireplace is the ability to create this kind of depth while maintaining a continuous, seamless surface.

Material selection was particularly important on this fireplace because the plaster sits directly alongside a creamy stone fireplace surround.

Instead of trying to match the stone exactly, we chose a complementary taupe tone.

The warm undertones in the Venetian plaster connect naturally with the cream and subtle variation of the stone, while the difference in texture helps define each material.

The stone provides solidity and refinement around the firebox, while the hand-applied plaster introduces movement and softness to the larger fireplace structure.

Together, the materials give the plaster fireplace a layered appearance without making the design feel busy.

The final finish was deliberately kept understated.

Rather than polishing the Venetian plaster to produce the more traditional glossy appearance associated with some Venetian plaster applications, we finished this fireplace using a flat wax.

This significantly changes how the surface feels within the room.

The reduced sheen allows the texture and colour variation of the plaster to become the focus instead of reflected light. It creates a softer, more contemporary finish that works particularly well with the restrained European character of the home.

The goal was not to make the fireplace look flashy.

It was to make it feel substantial, tactile and quietly luxurious.

The fireplace is part of a modern European-inspired custom home in Kleinburg where natural materials play an important role throughout the interior.

One of the home’s defining architectural features is the use of exposed wooden beams running through multiple areas of the house. Their warmth adds another natural element alongside stone, plaster and the home’s neutral colour palette.

Introducing a textured Venetian plaster finish made sense within that material language.

The irregular movement of hand-applied plaster feels more natural beside timber and stone than a perfectly uniform painted surface would. Each material has its own variation and character, but they remain connected through their warm, subdued tones.

A successful Venetian plaster fireplace starts with proper substrate preparation. We first refined the fireplace using corner beads to create crisp, durable edges, then used Durabond to build out and smooth the surrounding surfaces, correct imperfections and create a stable base for the decorative finish.

Once the substrate was ready, the fireplace was primed and finished with two coats of Venetian plaster. The first coat established the base, while the second was worked by hand to create the warm taupe colour, visible trowel movement and natural tonal variation.

After the plaster reached the right stage, we used a soft burnishing technique to gently refine the surface and bring out subtle depth without creating a highly polished appearance.

To complete the finish, we applied a flat wax topcoat. This protects the plaster while maintaining the low-sheen, textured look we wanted, giving the fireplace a soft, understated finish that complements the creamy stone surround.

A fireplace naturally becomes an architectural focal point, especially when it extends vertically and occupies a large portion of a wall.

One of the interesting aspects of this Kleinburg home is that the fireplaces were not treated with a single repeated finish. Instead, each space received a surface treatment suited to its architecture, surrounding materials and overall character.

In another area of the home, we used a pearlescent decorative plaster finish on the fireplace. Unlike the soft, flat-waxed taupe Venetian plaster used in the ensuite, the pearlescent finish interacts more noticeably with light, creating subtle shifts in depth and sheen as you move through the room.

This allowed the fireplace to remain refined and neutral while introducing a more luminous decorative quality.

In the home’s grand room, the design called for a very different approach. A curved media unit sits directly beside the stone fireplace, creating a transition between two architectural elements and two different materials.

We finished the curved media unit in microcement, using the material not only as a decorative finish but also to help visually resolve the transition between the masonry fireplace and the media unit.

Rather than leaving an obvious gap or abrupt joint between the two surfaces, we carefully brought the microcement into the transition area to create a cleaner, more seamless connection between the curved media unit and the adjacent stonework.

The result allows the stone fireplace and microcement media unit to remain visually distinct while still reading as one cohesive architectural composition.

Using Venetian plaster, pearlescent plaster and microcement within the same home demonstrates how different decorative finishes can be selected according to the architecture rather than applying one material everywhere. Each finish brings its own texture, movement and relationship with light while contributing to the same warm, modern European interior.

The most successful fireplace finishes don’t feel like something that was added after the room was designed.

They feel like part of the architecture.

For this Kleinburg ensuite, the taupe Venetian plaster connects the creamy fireplace stone, wooden architectural elements and warm neutral palette of the rest of the home.

Up close, you can see the variation created by the hand application. From farther away, those details blend together into a sophisticated, understated surface.

It is decorative without being ornamental, textured without becoming rustic, and luxurious without relying on shine.
