Beyond Organic: An Unapologetic Texture Wall Design
In the current landscape of textured walls in interior design, there is a heavy lean toward the organic—the soft, muted beiges and earthy limewash tones that define “Modern Rustic.” However, there is a second, more daring evolution of the texture wall design trend: the emergence of the Art Wall.
For homeowners seeking a bold, high-fashion statement that moves beyond the neutral, Venetian plaster is being reimagined as a medium for unapologetic creativity and dramatic flair.

1990s-Inspired High-Textured Venetian Plaster Masterpiece
The Vision: A 1990s Revival for a Modern Stairway
Our most recent project, a collaboration with the renowned Shane Baghai Development, pushed the boundaries of traditional application. The client’s vision was specific and nostalgic: to replicate a high-energy, highly textured aesthetic from the 1990s on a grand stairway accent wall.
In a space of this scale, standard paint or even wallpaper would disappear. The objective was to create a monolithic piece of art that could stand in harmony with the home’s collection of Murano glass, bridging the gap between architectural finish and fine art.
The Sampling Process: Bridging the Gap Between Vision and Reality
When working on a high-stakes “Art Wall” for a Shane Baghai property, there is no room for guesswork. A dramatic statement—like a high-texture black, red, and gold Venetian plaster—requires absolute precision in color depth and light reflectivity.
To ensure we deliver exactly what the client envisions, our process always begins with Sample Creation:
- Custom Texture Trials: Before touching the walls, we create large-scale physical sample boards. This allows the client to see and feel the “1990s-inspired” texture and the intensity of the movement under the specific lighting of their home.
- The “Murano Match”: For this project, we brought our samples on-site to ensure the red and gold pigments harmonized perfectly with the client’s Murano glass collection. We adjusted the wax finish on the samples until the level of shine matched the brilliance of the glass.
- Final Approval: We don’t start the installation until the client has signed off on a physical piece of art they can hold in their hands. This eliminates the uncertainty of “picking from a catalog” and ensures that the final result is a true reflection of their personal style.

The hand-troweled movement and the “Cavalli” inspired colors.
The Process: A High-Textured Wall Design
To achieve this “Roberto Cavalli” level of movement, we moved away from the subtle “clouding” of traditional plaster and leaned into high-relief texture.
- The Obsidian Foundation: We began with a base of black Venetian plaster, hand-troweled with intentional, aggressive texture. This dark “under-layer” provides the necessary shadows to make the subsequent colors pop.
- Metallic Infusion: Working over the black base, we introduced two distinct accents: a passionate crimson and a liquid bright gold. By layering these colors while the plaster was still receptive, we achieved a glass-like, high-movement effect that feels like molten lava or raw silk.
The result is a wall that doesn’t just sit in the room—it catches the light from every angle, echoing the brilliance of the nearby Murano glass.

Luxury Venetian Plaster Walls: A Study in High-Movement Texture Wall Design
The “Art Wall” Philosophy
When you choose Venetian plaster walls for an accent area like a stairway, you are no longer just choosing a wall color; you are commissioning a permanent installation.
Working with highly reputable developers like Shane Baghai, who are known for setting the standard in Toronto luxury, allows us to treat the wall as a canvas. This project proves that while earthy tones provide a sense of calm, the bold use of black, red, and gold provides a sense of theatre. It is a return to a time when design was unafraid to be loud, proud, and unapologetically expensive.
