Microcement Outdoor Kitchen: Modern Minimalist Luxury in Erin, Ontario

Outdoor Microcement for Island Base Cabinet & Doors

When designing a high-end outdoor living space in the Greater Toronto Area, the choice of materials is everything. Outdoor surfaces must not only look exceptionally beautiful, but they also have to endure some of the harshest climate shifts in North America—from blistering summer sun to freezing winter snow.

For our recent outdoor kitchen project in the scenic enclave of Erin, just outside Toronto, we combined cutting-edge material engineering with architectural design to create a seamless, high-performance masterpiece.

Here is how we utilized an advanced microcement microtopping to transform this outdoor kitchen into a sleek, monolithic focal point.

The Vision: Seamless Greige Minimalism

Our client wanted to move away from traditional, busy outdoor kitchen designs—such as heavy stone veneers or industrial stainless steel cabinetry. The goal was a clean, continuous, and “quiet luxury” aesthetic that would effortlessly bridge the gap between modern interior design and the natural landscape.

To achieve this, we curated a custom palette: a premium porcelain countertop paired with a custom greige microcement finish for the kitchen island base and integrated cabinet doors. Greige, the perfect marriage of warm beige and modern gray, brings an organic, stone-like warmth to the space without feeling stark.

The Engineering: The 4-Layer Microtopping Process over Deco Gloss

Achieving a flawless, long-lasting microcement finish outdoors requires meticulous substrate preparation and precision layering. We didn’t just apply microcement to a standard frame; we engineered it for maximum durability.

The Substrate Prep (Deco Gloss Base): We began by preparing the DensGlass Sheathing sustrate with a polymer-modified base coat. This provided an incredibly stable, rigid, and weather-resistant base frame to prevent any shifting or flexing beneath the finish.

The 4-Layer Application: Our artisan team hand-troweled four distinct layers of premium exterior microcement across the entire island base and individual cabinet doors. Applying four ultra-thin coats ensures a deeper structural bond, eliminates any telegraphing of seams, and allows us to build a rich, subtly tactile texture that catches the light beautifully.

The Porcelain Pairing: By wrapping the vertical surfaces and doors in microcement and crowning them with a sleek porcelain slab countertop, we achieved a completely seamless, handleless look. The porcelain adds a crisp, polished edge that perfectly contrasts the hand-troweled movement of the cement.

Defeating Toronto Weather: Advanced Waterproof & UV Protection

The biggest question homeowners ask about exterior microcement is: Can it survive a Toronto winter?

The answer lies entirely in the final sealing stage. To ensure this kitchen remains impervious to the elements, we sealed the entire greige microcement installation with an advanced, industrial-grade waterproof and UV-protected sealant.

This specialized barrier provides two critical lines of defense:

  • Absolute Moisture Shielding: It prevents rain, pool water, and humidity from penetrating the porous cement. This completely eliminates the risk of freeze-thaw cracking when trapped water expands during Ontario’s freezing winters.

  • UV Stability: Intense summer sun can fade darker pigments and yellow standard sealants. Our UV-protected topcoat guarantees that the soft, custom greige color will remain true and unblemished, resisting sun bleaching year after year.

  • Stain & Chemical Resistance: From red wine spills to grill grease and pool chemicals, the non-porous seal allows for effortless wipe-down maintenance.

Outdoor Microcement FAQ | Your Questions Answered by Toronto Pros
Can exterior microcement withstand Toronto’s freeze-thaw cycles?2026-05-06T18:29:44-04:00

Yes. Unlike interior-grade coatings, our Exterior Microcement is polymer-modified to remain flexible. This allows the surface to expand and contract during Ontario’s extreme temperature shifts between summer and winter, preventing the cracking or delamination common in traditional concrete.

Is microcement slippery when used on outdoor pool surrounds or wet decks?2026-05-06T18:30:45-04:00

Not if installed correctly. For exterior and wet areas, we incorporate an anti-slip aggregate into the final sealer layers. This provides essential grip and safety (even for bare feet) without losing the sleek, architectural aesthetic of the seamless surface.

Can I apply microcement over my existing wood deck?2026-05-06T18:31:33-04:00

We do not recommend applying microcement over traditional pressure-treated wood decks because wood moves too much. However, it is an excellent solution for resurfacing existing concrete pads, stone pavers, or specialized exterior-grade cement boards.

How long does an exterior microcement installation last in Ontario?2026-05-06T18:33:06-04:00

With professional installation and proper sealing, an exterior microcement surface can last 20+ years. Like any premium material, it requires a simple reseal every 3–5 years to maintain its UV protection and water resistance.

How much does exterior microcement installation cost in Toronto?2026-05-06T18:34:21-04:00

For professional installation in the GTA, pricing typically ranges from $20 to $35 per square foot. Factors such as the condition of the substrate, the need for reinforcement mesh, and the complexity of the design (e.g., stairs or built-in planters) will influence the final quote.

Does the microcement color fade in direct sunlight?2026-05-06T18:35:19-04:00

No. Our exterior systems use UV-stable mineral pigments that are integrated into the material itself. This ensures that even high-exposure areas like south-facing terraces and pool decks maintain their color depth for years without “yellowing” or fading.

Is exterior microcement resistant to road salt and winter chemicals?2026-05-06T18:36:40-04:00

While microcement is highly durable, salt can be corrosive to any high-end surface over time. We recommend using pet-friendly or non-corrosive ice melters and rinsing the surface in the spring to remove any winter salt residue.

Can microcement be used for outdoor kitchens and BBQ counters?2026-05-06T18:37:16-04:00

Absolutely. It is heat-resistant and, when finished with our professional-grade sealers, becomes non-porous and resistant to oil, grease, and wine spills—making it a superior choice for custom outdoor cabinetry and countertops.

How do I maintain my exterior microcement floor?2026-05-06T18:38:06-04:00

Maintenance on exterior microcement floor is remarkably easy because there are no grout lines. A simple sweep and a wash with a pH-neutral cleaner or a garden hose is usually all that’s required. Avoid using high-pressure power washers at close range, as they can wear down the protective sealer prematurely

Do you offer DIY kits for exterior microcement projects?2026-05-06T18:38:35-04:00

Yes. We offer Professional Exterior Kits specifically formulated for the Toronto climate. These kits include the flexible base coats, UV-stable pigments, and specialized exterior sealers required for a successful outdoor application.
