Microcement Fireplace: The Ultimate Concrete-Look Finish

Seamless Style: Transforming Your Hearth with a Microcement Fireplace

The fireplace is a natural focal point in any living space. For homeowners seeking a modern, minimalist, and deeply textural upgrade, resurfacing a hearth with microcement is the definitive solution. This versatile material offers the aesthetic appeal of raw concrete without the structural complications, making the microcement fireplace a premier choice for contemporary design.

We, as expert applicators, specialize in transforming dated or newly built fireplace surrounds into stunning, monolithic focal points.

What is Microcement?

Microcement is a high-performance coating made from cement, water-based resins, additives, and mineral pigments. Applied in thin layers (typically only 2-3 millimeters thick), it bonds powerfully to virtually any existing substrate—including brick, tile, drywall, or concrete—to create a continuous, durable, and seamless finish.

The result is a surface that mimics the organic, subtle movement of polished concrete but is fully sealed, non-porous, and flexible enough to resist minor cracking. Learn more about the properties of microcement, where it can be applied, and the costs associated on our service page.

Why Microcement is the Ideal Choice for a Fireplace Surfacing and Resurfacing

The fireplace, or hearth, is a challenging area for conventional materials due to heat exposure and sharp transitions. Microcement solves these challenges perfectly:

Benefits of Microcement for Fireplace Walls:

Benefit Description
Seamless & Monolithic Microcement eliminates grout lines and joints, creating a smooth, uninterrupted surface that wraps around corners, ideal for a sleek, modern look.
Superior Adhesion It can be applied directly over existing materials (like old stone or brick) with minimal demolition, simplifying the resurfacing process.
Durability & Heat Resistance Once fully cured and sealed, microcement is extremely durable and easily withstands the heat generated by a typical fireplace.
Minimal Thickness Applied thinly, it avoids adding bulk, preserving the original architectural lines of the microcement fireplace surround.

The Aesthetic Appeal of a Microcement Fireplace

Microcement offers a sophisticated, raw, and highly customizable aesthetic that fits seamlessly into industrial, minimalist, and contemporary luxury designs.

Variety in Colour and Tone

While often associated with gray, microcement offers extensive color flexibility to match any design palette:

  • Classic Concrete Tones: Neutral light to dark grays that emphasize the material’s raw, industrial heritage.

  • Minimalist Neutrals: Pure white microcement offers a clean, Scandinavian aesthetic, while black microcement provides a dramatic, grounding presence.

  • Earthy Warmth: Popular shades like warm brown, beige, sand, and bone colour create a cozier, more inviting atmosphere, perfect for softening the modern texture.

Our Reviews

Chromatist Painters, led by Shayan, exceeded my expectations with their exceptional work on painting my entire house. They went above and beyond, showcasing their talent and attention to detail. Shayan’s guidance throughout the process was invaluable, ensuring that every corner was flawlessly painted. The team’s commitment to excellence and their dedication to customer satisfaction were evident in the outstanding results. I highly recommend Chromatist Painters for their extraordinary service and commend Shayan for his invaluable assistance.

Homestars

We engaged Chromatist to paint our 100 year old home in mid-town Toronto this spring. There were a number of issues that made this job a little unique. We had just gotten our knob-and-tube wiring replaced so there were a lot of holes that had been recently roughly plastered over.
Also, there was a large hole in the lathe-and-plaster ceiling of our dining room from a plumbing leak. Finally, our hallway was finished with faux
painting that simulated marble and brick with some trompe-l’oele of leaves in a vase that we wished to preserve rather than paint over.

Shayan and his team were a pleasure to work with and did a great job on this challenging project. Every day the painters were very considerate and minimized disruption such that we were able to continue to work from home during the whole process.

We especially appreciate the work on the faux painting in the hall, where Shayan had someone come in to analyze color matches and then hand painted and blended the colors so as to seamlessly hide the cracks and plaster that was there before. It looks better now than it did when we bought our house (a long time ago!).

Thanks Shayan and team. We are definitely interested in working with you again.

Totally professional, trustworthy and got our job done very quickly ! They worked around our family of 5 while painting our whole house. They also worked well around the other tradespeople we had coming and going. Most importantly, the painting looked fantastic.

I highly recommend Chromatist painters!

I normally don’t like dealing with contractors, except for those few who truly understand the value of customer service. And Shayan and his team are the best! On time. On budget. Excellent job. Friendly. And Shayan knows that superior customer service is the key to happy customers. I highly recommend Shayan and Chromatist for any painting needs, you will be so happy you did

Custom Textures and Finishes

Unlike flat paint, the final appearance of a microcement fireplace is defined by the applicator’s hand. Finishes range from a rustic, trowel-marked texture to a smooth, polished sheen, ensuring every microcement fireplace is a unique piece of architectural art.

Microcement Fireplace Cost: What to Expect

The cost of resurfacing a fireplace with microcement in Toronto starts from  $2,800; influenced by several factors:

  • Surface Size and Complexity: Larger and taller surrounds and those with intricate architectural details (e.g., mantels, corbels) require more material and labor.

  • Condition of Existing Substrate: Extensive repair or leveling of the existing brick or tile and the preparation work for the newly built fireplaces before application will add to the total cost.

  • Colour and Finish: Custom colors or complex finishes (e.g., highly textured vs. ultra-smooth) may slightly impact the price.

  • Sealing Requirements: High-traffic or heavily used fireplaces require the highest-grade sealants for optimal protection.

While generally more of an investment than traditional tile or paint, the microcement fireplace cost reflects the value of a bespoke, seamless, and high-performance real concrete-look finish.

Microcement Fireplace Surfacing and Resurfacing

Can microcement be applied over my existing brick or tile fireplace?2025-10-20T13:06:03-04:00

Yes. Microcement is highly adhesive and is specifically designed to be applied directly over many existing surfaces, including brick, stone, and tile, after proper surface preparation (priming and possibly leveling) is complete.

Is a microcement fireplace safe near high heat?2025-10-20T13:07:59-04:00

Absolutely. Microcement is an excellent heat-resistant material. Once the material and its sealant are fully cured, the fireplace surround will safely withstand the high temperatures generated by wood-burning or gas inserts.

Does the seamless finish mean microcement doesn’t have any texture?2025-10-20T13:09:51-04:00

No. While the finish is seamless (no grout lines), the texture is highly customizable. You can choose a finish that is very smooth and polished, or one with subtle or heavy trowel marks to enhance the organic, concrete aesthetic.

How do I maintain and clean my microcement fireplace?2025-10-20T13:12:29-04:00

Microcement is non-porous when sealed, making it extremely easy to clean. We recommend using neutral, pH-balanced cleaners and avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbing pads to preserve the sealant.

How long does the installation of a microcement on a fireplace TV wall take?2025-10-20T13:14:35-04:00

The installation of a microcement finish on a fireplace feature wall generally takes 3 to 5 days to complete. This comprehensive timeline accounts for the necessary steps: surface preparation, applying the adhesion layers, applying multiple thin microcement coats, allowing for adequate drying time between coats, and applying the final protective sealant to ensure durability.

How much does microcement fireplace cost per sqft?2025-10-20T13:18:48-04:00

Microcement fireplace cost is typically quoted as a total project price rather than a fixed square foot rate due to the highly skilled, artisanal nature of the work. However, to provide an estimate, pricing for a typical fireplace project starts around $25 per square foot. For large-scale projects exceeding 1,000 square feet, the price can be lowered to as low as $20 per square foot. Please note that the final cost depends heavily on the complexity of the surface (corners, edges, mantel details) and the condition of the existing substrate.
