For this unique fireplace transformation in a Toronto home, we took a conventional two-sided tiled fireplace and elevated it into a sculptural centerpiece using Venetian plaster.

Our process began with an on-site consultation where we discussed the client’s goals, aesthetic vision, and how the fireplace interacts with the surrounding living area. Three hand-crafted sample boards were created:

• A rustic, antique look with aged depth
• A bold, heavy metallic finish
• A nuanced blend of dual metallic tones with artistic texture

The third sample—a mix of warm metallic tones and layered texture—won the client’s heart for its perfect balance of sheen and character.

Before applying the finish, we closed two inset niches on the fireplace’s structure to create a clean, monolithic surface. This architectural decision contributed to a more cohesive and modern canvas for the plasterwork.

We applied the chosen Venetian plaster in layers, blending two custom metallic shades. The result is a dual-toned, hand-troweled masterpiece that subtly changes with the light—from warm golden tones to deep graphite shadows.
