Decorative Plaster Is Replacing Millwork in 2025 Commercial Design
In 2025 commercial design decorative plaster finishes—such as Venetian plaster, limewash, and microcement—are redefining the visual language interiors. These high-performance, highly customizable wall treatments are steadily replacing traditional millwork, trim, and paneling, not just for aesthetic reasons, but for their ability to create seamless, sculptural, and sensory-rich environments. With the rising demand for minimal yet textured interiors, businesses are opting for finishes that elevate the entire architecture, rather than add elements onto it.
We’re seeing this shift play out across restaurant feature walls, boutique hotel lobbies, curved staircase enclosures, barrel ceilings, wellness studios, and high-end retail spaces. These environments benefit from finishes that are not only beautiful, but durable, cleanable, and expressive — all while providing a cohesive look across expansive surfaces without breaks or transitions.
Unlike millwork or panel molding, which often compartmentalize a wall and add visual busyness, decorative plasters allow for organic transitions and fluid forms, ideal for modern commercial design. Whether it’s a buttery limewash on a rounded soffit, a metallic plaster behind a reception desk, or textured microcement wrapping around seating banquettes and walls, these materials become part of the structure itself — not just a finish, but a statement.
Design-forward architects and interior designers are embracing plaster for its versatility, luxury appeal, and low-maintenance benefits. In spaces where brand experience and ambiance are everything, the right plaster finish can define mood, control light, and add depth in a way that traditional woodwork simply can’t compete with.

Why Plaster Is Taking Over: Design Meets Durability
Decorative plaster isn’t just beautiful — it’s versatile, durable, and customizable beyond imagination.
Compared to millwork, plaster finishes are:
- Seamless (no joints, no trim, just fluid surfaces)
- Tintable in any Benjamin Moore or designer colour
- Water-resistant and cleanable when sealed
- Ideal for curves, arches, domes, and vertical elements
- Able to go over many surfaces — microcement can be applied directly over concrete, tile, or drywall
With a skilled artisan, these finishes become the architecture. They don’t sit on top of walls — they become the wall.

Our Reviews
Chromatist Painters, led by Shayan, exceeded my expectations with their exceptional work on painting my entire house. They went above and beyond, showcasing their talent and attention to detail. Shayan’s guidance throughout the process was invaluable, ensuring that every corner was flawlessly painted. The team’s commitment to excellence and their dedication to customer satisfaction were evident in the outstanding results. I highly recommend Chromatist Painters for their extraordinary service and commend Shayan for his invaluable assistance.
We engaged Chromatist to paint our 100 year old home in mid-town Toronto this spring. There were a number of issues that made this job a little unique. We had just gotten our knob-and-tube wiring replaced so there were a lot of holes that had been recently roughly plastered over.
Also, there was a large hole in the lathe-and-plaster ceiling of our dining room from a plumbing leak. Finally, our hallway was finished with faux
painting that simulated marble and brick with some trompe-l’oele of leaves in a vase that we wished to preserve rather than paint over.Shayan and his team were a pleasure to work with and did a great job on this challenging project. Every day the painters were very considerate and minimized disruption such that we were able to continue to work from home during the whole process.
We especially appreciate the work on the faux painting in the hall, where Shayan had someone come in to analyze color matches and then hand painted and blended the colors so as to seamlessly hide the cracks and plaster that was there before. It looks better now than it did when we bought our house (a long time ago!).
Thanks Shayan and team. We are definitely interested in working with you again.
Shayan and his team were awesome!
Totally professional, trustworthy and got our job done very quickly ! They worked around our family of 5 while painting our whole house. They also worked well around the other tradespeople we had coming and going. Most importantly, the painting looked fantastic.
I highly recommend Chromatist painters!
I normally don’t like dealing with contractors, except for those few who truly understand the value of customer service. And Shayan and his team are the best! On time. On budget. Excellent job. Friendly. And Shayan knows that superior customer service is the key to happy customers. I highly recommend Shayan and Chromatist for any painting needs, you will be so happy you did
Performance and Practicality
Beyond looks, plaster finishes also check the box for function:
In many commercial settings, plaster is replacing millwork not only for cost and speed, but because it offers a smoother, more sculptural, and more modern result.

Where We’re Seeing It in 2025
Decorative plaster is being specified in:
- Restaurant walls and bar fronts
- Lobby feature staircases and curved elevator surrounds
- Salon and spa interiors, including barrel ceilings
- Boutique fitness studios and wellness centers
- Retail flagships, luxury offices, and hotel suites
- Fireplace surrounds, hood fans, and custom niches
Microcement, in particular, is becoming a go-to for countertops, furniture bases, and architectural columns, because it can adhere to nearly any base, giving a concrete-like look without the weight or seams.

Where We’re Seeing It in 2025
Millwork will always have a place in design — but in 2025, decorative plaster has become the sculptor’s medium. Whether you’re looking to soften a space with organic texture or make a dramatic brand statement with metallic plaster, this is the year to go beyond panels and let walls become works of art.
If you’re renovating or designing a commercial space in Toronto, now’s the time to explore how custom plaster finishes can elevate your interior — and tell your story, one wall at a time.
