Merging Stone and Microcement in a Seamless Great Room Design

Architectural Artistry: How a Curved Microcement Wall Won the Design

In high-end interior design, the most “winning” moments happen when technical engineering meets aesthetic beauty. For our latest Great Room project, the challenge wasn’t just about finishing a surface; it was about creating a curved microcement wall that could seamlessly bridge the gap between rugged natural stone and modern cabinetry.

Why We Chose Microcement Over Traditional Plasters?

While Venetian plaster and Limewash are prized for their delicate, mineral beauty, Microcement is chosen when the design demands a “workhorse” material that doesn’t sacrifice elegance.

  • Unmatched Sturdiness: Unlike traditional lime-based plasters, which can be prone to chipping in high-impact areas, microcement is a high-strength polymer-modified coating. It possesses a high compressive strength that makes it virtually indestructible under normal residential or commercial use. It doesn’t just sit on the surface; it bonds at a molecular level to the substrate.
  • Subtle, Sophisticated Aesthetics: Many choose microcement for its “quiet” luxury. While Venetian plaster can be highly reflective and dramatic, microcement offers a more grounded, matte, or satin patina. It provides a contemporary, stone-like movement that feels architectural rather than decorative.
  • Extreme Durability: Because it is finished with specialized high-performance sealers, microcement is entirely non-porous. This makes it the only decorative plaster in the lineup that can reliably handle heavy foot traffic on floors, the heat of a fireplace, and the constant moisture of a bathroom floor or vanity without staining or cracking.

The Challenge: Merging Stone and Structure

The Creative Process: Engineering the Curve

Every curved microcement wall we build starts with a master application of structural creativity. Because we were closing a gap between irregular stone edges and smooth built-ins, we couldn’t just “apply and go.”

  • Metallic Mesh Bridge: We creatively installed a metallic mesh to stabilize the junction between the stone fireplace and the cabinetry.
  • Sturdy Substrate: We plastered over the mesh to create a rock-solid, uniform base.
  • The Master Application: Once the substrate was prepped, we hand-troweled our microcement to create that signature, seamless curve.

An Earthy Finish for a Cozy Great Room

Microcement isn’t just for floors. Its incredible adhesion allows it to bond to almost any stable substrate, enabling us to coat:

  • Microcement Walls: Creating a durable, scuff-resistant vertical surface.
  • Integrated Niches: Finishing storage cubbies or display areas without bulky corner beads.
  • Complex Curves: Wrapping playground tunnels or rounded cafe counters with a smooth, tactile finish.

Why a Master Application Matters

A curved microcement wall is only as good as the artisan behind the trowel. This project proves that each installation is a unique creative process. By merging different materials into one monolithic structure, we transformed a complex transition into the room’s most stunning architectural feature.

Microcement and The Future of High-Performance Design

As modern architecture leans toward minimalism and organic forms, the demand for high-performance materials has never been higher. Standard drywall and paint simply cannot achieve the structural depth or the seamless flow required for complex features like a curved microcement wall.

Microcement is the future of interior design because it bridges the gap between raw durability and refined aesthetics. Unlike traditional concrete, our specialized microcement is engineered for flexibility and superior adhesion, allowing us to wrap architectural elements—from cabinetry to fireplaces—without the risk of cracking or visible joints. It is a waterproof, heat-resistant, and low-maintenance solution that doesn’t just cover a surface; it transforms it into a lifelong architectural feature.

Whether you are looking for an earthy, textured finish or a sleek industrial look, our team specializes in the master application of these high-performance coatings to elevate your home’s “fifth wall” and beyond.

Common Questions About Microcement: What It Is, Where to Use It, and What to Avoid
Is microcement good for bathrooms and wet areas?2026-05-07T11:23:22-04:00

Absolutely. Microcement is an ideal choice for bathrooms because it is inherently waterproof and seamless. Without grout lines, there is nowhere for moisture to penetrate or bacteria to grow, making it a hygienic, spa-like solution for showers, floors, and even custom-coated vanities.

Is microcement cheaper than tiling?2026-05-07T11:22:57-04:00

While the raw material cost may be comparable to high-end tile, microcement is a specialized, labor-intensive craft. It is often more expensive than basic ceramic tiling due to the multi-stage hand-troweling process. However, you save on demolition costs (if going over old tile) and benefit from a long-term, maintenance-free surface.

Is it expensive to microcement a bathroom?2025-08-27T12:39:04-04:00

Yes, microcement bathrooms usually cost between $25–$35+ per square foot in Toronto, depending on the size, prep work, and finish level. Accent features, niches, or ceilings can add to the cost due to the custom labor involved.

Does microcement crack or go mouldy easily?2026-05-07T11:26:14-04:00

When professionally installed, microcement does not crack easily. It is polymer-modified to provide flexibility that traditional concrete lacks. Regarding hygiene, because it is seamless and non-porous, microcement does not go mouldy—it eliminates the damp grout lines where mould typically thrives.

Can microcement be applied directly over existing tiles or drywall?2026-05-07T11:24:12-04:00

Yes. One of the biggest advantages of microcement is its incredible adhesion. It can be applied directly over existing tiles (saving you the mess of demolition) or standard drywall. We use a specialized fiberglass mesh and high-bond primers to ensure the finish remains stable and crack-free over these substrates.

What is the lifespan of microcement?2026-05-07T11:27:42-04:00

A professionally installed and sealed microcement surface can last 20+ years. Much like natural stone or hardwood, it is a “renewable” surface. If it shows wear after a decade, it can be lightly sanded and resealed to look brand new without the need for a full replacement.

Can I DIY a microcement bathroom?2026-05-07T11:29:45-04:00

While we offer Professional Microcement Kits for DIYers, bathrooms are the most technically challenging areas due to waterproofing requirements. For a shower or wet room, we highly recommend our professional installation service to ensure a 100% watertight, warrantied finish.

What is the difference between Microcement, Epoxy, and Tadelakt?2026-05-07T11:36:46-04:00

Unlike Epoxy (which is a synthetic plastic resin), Microcement has a real cementitious feel and matte aesthetic. Compared to Tadelakt (a traditional lime-based plaster), Microcement is much more durable, easier to maintain, and does not require specialized soaps for resealing, making it more practical for modern Toronto homes.

Why has microcement become so popular in bathroom renovations recently?2025-08-27T12:38:32-04:00

Microcement has gained major popularity in bathroom renovations because of its seamless, waterproof finish and modern, minimalist look. In 2025, design trends are shifting away from grout lines and heavy tile patterns toward smoother, sculptural surfaces. Microcement offers:

  • Custom textures and colours
  • Easy maintenance (no grout to clean)
  • Versatility (can be applied on walls, floors, ceilings, and furniture)
  • Quick installation over existing surfaces like tile or drywall
  • It’s also compatible with curved forms, niches, and integrated shelves—making it a go-to for contemporary, spa-like bathrooms.

What colour options are available for microcement for my project?2026-05-07T11:38:34-04:00

The color possibilities are virtually limitless. Unlike the limited earthy palette of Tadelakt, our Microcement can be tinted to a wide range of RAL and custom shades—from minimalist soft sands and industrial greys to bold architectural tones.
